Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED)
The mission of Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) is to improve the health, economy and quality of life in Northeast Ohio. The university achieves this through the medicine, pharmacy and health sciences education of students and practitioners at all levels; the development of new knowledge through research in the biomedical, community health and behavioral sciences; and the provision of community service and health education throughout Northeast Ohio.
NEOMED is also committed to active engagement and support of innovation, technology development and entrepreneurial activities through the efficient and effective deployment of its resources. Based on NEOMED’s established expertise in medical research and education, it is focused on technology commercialization in the biomedical industry, with special emphasis on four research focus areas: auditory neuroscience; community-based mental health; skeletal biology; and metabolic disease, cardiovascular disease and regenerative medicine.
In addition, NEOMED has made several resources available to entrepreneurs. One such resource is the Research, Entrepreneurship, Discovery and Innovation Zone (REDIzone℠) program, an enriched biomedical incubator on NEOMED’s Rootstown campus. The REDIzone offers physical office and lab space for early stage biomedical companies, and is also a portal to many other resources, including Institutional Review Board certification for clinical trials; a world-class Comparative Medicine Unit; technology transfer assistance; and mentorship from renowned faculty and scientists. Additionally, the REDIzone facilitates regional partnerships through its active affiliations with eight major teaching hospitals and its links to local and state business development organizations and regional funding resources.
"Entrepreneurship is vital to sustained economic growth, and NEOMED is committed to supporting the entrepreneurial activities of our faculty as well as developing companies interested in collaboration through innovative public-private partnerships. From our new state-of-the-art Research and Graduate Education Building to the expansion of dedicated physical facilities and commercialization resources through our REDIzone, NEOMED continues to make resources available to entrepreneurs in order to foster growth and regional economic development." – Walter E. Horton Jr., Ph.D., vice president for research and dean of the College of Graduate Studies at NEOMED
